The temperature is dropping almost daily now, and winter is approaching fast! Don’t get left behind and end up trying to winterize your outdoor kitchen after it’s already too late!

With another fun filled summer in the books, we need to ensure that your kitchen is ready for winter and more importantly, ready for next summer without any damage or repairs needed leading into next summer. Follow along with a few of these simple yet extremely effective tips to ensure you outdoor kitchen is ready for anything that winter can throw at it!

Most of the outdoor kitchens that we deal with are supplied with all stainless steel appliances. So we’re going to be covering mostly cleaning techniques regarding stainless steel. The first thing to do when you start your winterization, is to make sure that you clean your fridge out top to bottom, including the ice maker and ice box. Make sure that you turn your ice maker off before emptying it, and giving it a good wipe down. Continue cleaning the rest of the insides of all your appliances before you move on to the exterior so nothing is left behind!

After the inside of your appliances are clean, we can go ahead and move on to the outside. We’ll start off first with just some warm soapy water, and nice microfiber cloth. Some regular dawn dish soap will work just fine! Make sure you clean from top to bottom so no dirt or grime gets left behind. Once all of your appliances are clean and dry, we can move on to the next phase of prepping your stainless steel for winter.

When it comes to stainless steel, we always recommend using a nice stainless steel polish before winter hits. Not only will it leave your appliances looking better, it will also keep them much better protected throughout the long months of winter. Another option for stainless steel appliances would be to place a cover from the manufacturer over them. As for the cabinets, we can just wipe them down with a damp cloth and then once dry, apply some wood oil for the same affect as polish on your stainless. After polish and oil are added, your appliances and cabinets will be well prepared for winter.

Next on the list is preparing all of your outdoor water lines to avoid freezing and breaking. The first step to this process is shutting off all of the water supply to your outdoor kitchen. We recommend finding the indoor shutoff, so you will have now water still running outside to your appliances even tho they are shut off. After you locate a shut off the main water source, you will want to drain all of the lines after the valve. The most important lines are your refrigerator, your ice maker, and your sink. This will get as much water out of the lines as possible. Once the lines are drained, you will want to leave all of your valves cracked halfway open to ensure if any water that is leftover freezes, it will push out of the valves and not expand and break your lines.
